LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team remained unbeaten in USA South play with a pair of sweeps on Saturday inside Barnes PE Center. The Lady Scots defeated Huntingdon 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-19) in the first match of the day before capping the action with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-10) win over Agnes Scott.
Covenant (10-7, 5-0 USA South) has won seven of its last eight overall and has dropped just three sets in USA South play.
MATCH ONE: Covenant 3, Huntingdon 0
Covenant dominated on the attack with a 40-22 edge in total kills to knock off Huntingdon in three sets, 25-18, 25-10, 25-19 in Saturday's first match.
Ginny Moore tallied 12 kills and Chloe Storm had 10 in the win. Covenant hit .245 as a team, while limiting Huntingdon to a negative percentage at -.046. Schuyler Moore had 34 assists and four block assists and Emily Moore led the defense with 13 digs. Alexa Spurling totaled six kills and three block assists, while Jessica Seehorn had four kills and 11 digs. Hannah Stewart added 12 digs.
The Lady Scots fell behind early in the first set, but rebounded quickly. Covenant took the lead for good in the set at 15-14 after a Huntingdon error. The lead would continue to grow until a kill from Spurling ended the frame. Covenant got off to a fast start in the second taking a 13-2 lead before cruising to the set win and a 2-0 match lead.
In the third, Covenant would also get out to an early lead as a kill from Spurling made it 12-7. The Lady Scots extended the margin to 20-10 on a Ginny Moore kill before Huntingdon mounted a small rally. Another Ginny Moore kill ended the Huntingdon rally and gave Covenant the match victory.
Huntingdon (10-11, 2-1 USA South) was led by Alexis Creasman's seven kills, while Kaitlyn Carter had 11 assists. Amy Tyma added nine digs for the visiting Hawks.
MATCH TWO: Covenant 3, Agnes Scott 0
Against Agnes Scott, Covenant continued to out-hit the opponent as the Lady Scots collected 36 kills and a .245 percentage to pick up another sweep, 25-20, 25-12, 25-10.
Agnes Scott was also limited to a negative hitting percentage at -.038 on the afternoon. Hannah Harris led Covenant with eight kills, while Storm and Seehorn had six apiece. Schuyler Moore totaled 30 assists and nine service aces and eight digs in the win. Stewart led Covenant with 14 digs.
The first set saw three ties, but Covenant got out to a 15-8 lead and would never trailed the rest of the game to take it 25-20. Covenant accumulated 16 kills in the set and hit .294, its best of the match. The Lady Scots never trailed in the second set and went on an 11-2 run to break open a tight set and take the 25-12 victory.
It was another fast start for Covenant in the third set as the Lady Scots jumped out to a 12-3 lead and never looked back. Another 11-2 run capped the match and a kill from Lindsey Stephens ended the set and the match.
Agnes Scott (5-11, 1-4 USA South) got 12 assists from Anna Tomkins and 16 digs from Bella Kammerer.
Covenant will host Berea on Oct. 4 inside Barnes PE Center. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
